Pearls of Digital Comics: AFTERLIFT (Chip Zdarsky, Comixology Originals)

Comixology had seven years, when it was in 2014 acquired by Amazon. In May 2016 it launched service Comixology Unlimited as the second biggest subscription service for american comic books (biggest is Marvel Unlimited). And after another two years the company started Comixology Originals, digital first comic books which are available for subscribers on the date of release.

First Comixology original comic book was Harvey Kurtzman's Marley's Ghost where they finished Kurtzman´s unfinished project and it received Eisner Awards 2018 for Best Digital Comics. Then in June 2018 started the first wave of Comixology Originals with four titles and in July they announced another seven titles. In 2019 they released more than 20 new Comixology Originals titles. One of the best was AFTERLIFT by Chip Zdarsky and Jason Loo.

Janice is a young teenager who is working on the nights as a taxi driver. Once she had a fare with a strange couple. And everything is changing. Life of Janice will never be as before.

We have a lot of cars in AFTERLIFT, even in the air. We have here Purgatory, Heaven and Hell, even Lucifer. We have swords fight, demons and angels. And all this makes perfectly sense, even there are some religionistic thoughts and live philosophy behind. And a lot of action.

Chip Zdarsky is one of most popular new Marvel writers in recent years and this book fully shows his action and pointed storytelling. Canadian artist Jason Loo is not so known yet in the comics community but his project The Pitiful Human-Lizard is a very nice alternate-superhero story. Images of cars and Hell in AFTERLIFT are very good and fits to Zdarsky´s words.

Story is closed and there was no continuation announced. I think that it is not needed. It is a very good book as it is and other chapters can be felt as money grab only. Originally it was published in five monthly 20+ page long chapters, then published in digital collection (this is the only way you can buy it at Comixology now). But this year the company made a deal with Dark Horse Comics for print releases of some of their recent Originals titles. AFTERLIFT was printed in February 2021 as first of them.
