Pearls of Digital Comics: Adventures of Superman vol. 2

Year 2011 was the breaking point for digital comics and specifically DC digital comics. First issue of New 52, Justice League #1, was the first DC issue which was released the same day in print and digitally. For 3.99$, which ose one dollar extra from regular price, you had a special bagged issue with redeemable digital code (after a few months Marvel made its first issue with free redeemable digital code). This option had only some titles but it was quite popular at the beginning. And in this year DC started digital first series tied to Batman Arkham games (very first by Paul Dini). In the beginning of 2012 then they started a few digital series and after while there was new digital issue every day (best-selling series was Smallville Season 11, but very strong sales were also Legends of Dark Knight vol. 2 and Injustice: Gods Among Us). One of these titles were Adventures of Superman vol. 2.

Series had 51 chapters which were printed in 17 issues and three TPBs. They were not set in current New 52 continuity, they were targeted more for occasional readers. It was written by new authors which just started their carriers with Big 2 and some of them are the best today. Jeff Lemire presented a very nice story about child's play when we met Bizarro, Luthor, Parzite and Brainic. In the next story Justin Jordan takes Bizarro to fight Superman and it will end not-so-predictable. Matt Kindt had a very good story for complet printed issue. Other issues were by Jeff Parker, Abnett and Lanning, Rob Williams and a lot of others. They had art by Chris Samnee, Joƫlle Jones, Sal Buscema and Jeff Lemire illustrated the issue which he wrote. Originally was this digital series released in tablet format which also was starting then.

This series has a strong legacy and a lot of digital series in the last 10 years were published the same way - 20+ tablet format chapters, for 0.99$, few of them in printed issue, then collected in TPB. Only in the last two years is DC trying to publish digital comics in full page format. And this year they are trying with full digital issues in full page format, with a price of printed issue. About Milestone revival I will write in another article soon.
