Mini Review: Truth & Justice #1 (8/10)

In comics there can be two types of anthologies: Same as in books, when anthology is one issue which contents few stories, often with different characters and creators, and same as in tv-shows, where anthology is show, which after some number of episodes (generally one season) is completely changing title characters. Truth & Justice is the second type.

It is one of a bunch of weekly digital series which is DC Comics starting this year.  It will be collected in print issues after every three digital chapters which will be one story with one character. So in the first three digital chapters will be the title character Vixen, in next three we will have Superman, then John Constantine.

It is a very strange decision to start the anthology series with Vixen as the titular character. Even if she was in the TV show Legends of Tomorrow as a regular character (but it was grand-daughter of most known Vixen which is Mari McCabe, hero of this comics) and had own animated mini-series, she is far from A or B list. She is known mainly for New 52 readers as she was prominent in Justice League Dark and Justice League International. During Rebirth, she was part of Justice League of America, which wasn´t considered very good. But there was a very nice one-shot at the start of the series, dedicated to her, with her origin.

These three issues are written by Geoffrey Thorne and illustrated by ChrisCross. Thorne is novelist, screenwriter and comic book writer, which was just named as writer of the main Green Lantern book, starting in April. ChrisCross is an experienced artist known from Milestone, Marvel's Captain Marvel and DC´s Firestorm and digital Smallville series.

First issue of the series has to present new characters and set the tone of the series. The latter is done well, there is a lot of action in african landscape, known from Vixen stories. Mari met Impala, african speedster, who is a member of the United Nation metahuman team Global Guardians. She is finding the head of this team and a secret which involves gorillas.

Characterisation is not so good, especially as there is only Dr. Mist as previously known character (apart from Vixen) - all others are new. Dialogues are good, the story is interesting but I can't say much about characters. I hope that it will be cleaned in the next issue.

Artistically it's a very nice issue with colorful art. ChrisCross knows how to choose important details and how to  draw characters. Everything is very clean and pleasurable.

Generally, it's a good first issue whose only fault is lack of deeper characterisation. I'm interested in another one.
