Pearls of Digital Comics: Arrowverse tie-ins

I want to look at the best things from the history of digital comics. I’m starting with Arrowverse tie-ins because this has probably most known trade paperbacks (even in Slovakia we have them, in czech translation). But this series of articles (as all this blog) will be not only about DC, I want to write abot Marvel Infinite comics and Comixology Originals later

First Arrowverse tie-in came even before the first Arrowverse TV show started. Arrow Special Edition #1 was released for guests of San Diego Comic Con in July 2012, then distributed to comics shops. It was preview of first episode plis few pages from New 52’ s Green Arrow (vol.5) #1. It wasn’t digital and you can read digitally in the first TPB of Arrow 2012 series.

Arrow

First Arrowverse digital series had 36 chapters and it was the longest from all series below. It started when the first episode of Arrow was aired, October 10th 2012. These chapters were then released in 12 printed issues and two TPBs. Stories were written by series creators Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg, with several authors providing scripts. Art of all covers plus interior illustration in several issues drawn Mike Grell who is responsible for rebooting Arrow at the end of 1980s, who created such classics as Longbow Hunters and origin Wonder Years and started the first Green Arrow ongoing series. It was released in tablet format, like all Arrowverse digital tie-ins.

Stories contain elements familiar for Arrow TV show viewers. Lot of flashbacks, a lot of stealth action, even classic “You have failed this city” . We also have most of the characters known from the TV show, all the Oliver Queen’s family, John Diggle, Malcolm Merlyn, Sarah, Laurel and Quentin Lance, in the half of the series comes Felicity. Villains are Deadshot, Deatstroke, Frank Bertinelli, at the end even Ra's al Ghul. It is pure pleasure for fans of TV show and I think that also fans of the comic book’s Green Arrow can like it. Series ended in december 2013

Arrow season 2.5

Between the second and third season of TV Arrow DC started digital first Season 2.5. Written by Guggenheim, art was provided mostly by Joe Bennett, superstar known from Teen Titans, Deathstroke, Spider-man or Hulk. Big bad was Brother Blood but very interesting was Crisis In Kahndaq, story in backups and one issue, staring Suicide Squad. All 24 chapters were collected in 12 printed issues and one TPB. Series started in september 2014 and ended in July 2015.

Flash Season 0

The Flash TV Show started at CW in October 2014. In September started digital first series which ran for 24 issues,. They were collected in 12 printed issues ad one TPB. Along with Kreisberg it was written with occasional TV series writers Brooke Eikmeier, Katherine Walczak and others. Majority of the series was drawn by Wonder Woman, Godzila and JKevin Smith’ s Green Arrow, issue. He will no artist in main Superman title since March 2021.

It contains mostly shorter stories which are set between Barry’ s origin and his adventures in TV show. You will meet all characters from TV, like Cisco, Kaitleen, dr. Harrison Wells or West family. Biggest surprise Suicide Squad in position of villains, other villain is King Shark. At the end is the first meeting with classic rogues Captain Cold and Heat Wave. Flash Season 0 ended in July 2015 too.

Arrow: The Dark Archer

In january 2016 started very interesting miniseries, if you compare it with other Arrowverse comics. It was written by Malcolm Merlyn actor John Barrowman (also known as Captain Jack Harkness from Doctor Who / Torchwood. It is the origin of Matlcolm who half a year before ended his main villain role in Arrow TV series. Co-written by Borrowman’ s wife Carole and fantastically drawn by Daniel Sampere (Justice League, Injustice, Baitgirl), it told Malcolm adventures in South America, Nanda Parbat and other places. It has 12 chapters and was collected in TPB.

The Adventures of Supergirl

Newest series in Arrowverse tie-ins is based on the Supergirl show, which started at CBS in October 2015 and then moved to CW next season. Digital first series started in January 2016 and ended in July that year (month after Arrow: The Dark Archer). It had 13 chapters and was collected in six paper issues and one TPB. It was written by Sterling Gates, experienced author of various DC properties as Superman and Green Lantern. The story is based on Kara´s adventures in DEO, so we have a lot of her sister Alex and Hank in his human form, but a very little of her private life and career ajs journalist.
